Advanced protection needed to secure medical industry’s increasing use of digital data.
Helsinki, Finland – May 16, 2023: Finnish cyber security provider WithSecure™ (formerly known as F-Secure Business) announced today that it will begin offering cyber security solutions to medical institutions in Japan through its partner, Fujitsu Japan. With this deal, WithSecure™ will provide server protection and endpoint protection (EPP = Endpoint Protection) for systems used by hospitals, clinics, and other medical institutions.
In a healthcare industry where agile patient care and information sharing between healthcare organizations is highly encouraged, security measures are essential. Medical institutions have become a prime target for cyber attacks. Medical institutions are facing threats such as unauthorized access to extremely sensitive personal information (medical data and history, for example), erroneous medication/treatment acts caused by the falsification of electronic medical records, and failures in viewing electronic medical records and sharing information within regional medical information coordination networks due to ransomware. In September 2020, a university hospital system in Dusseldorf, Germany, was shut down due to ransomware, resulting in the death of a patient who had to be rushed to another hospital for treatment. Amid the COVID pandemic, medical institutions need to defend themselves against increasingly complex/sophisticated cyber attacks. In Japan, the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW) issued "Strengthening Cyber Security Measures at Medical Institutions" in October 2018, urging medical institutions to further improve security awareness and strengthen security measures.
WithSecure's cyber security solutions provided through Fujitsu Japan, a leading solution provider with extensive experience in the healthcare industry, will enable the provision of more reliable security measures to medical institutions and patients. EPP will provide services such as infection prevention by detecting and preventing the execution of malicious software, and protection of medical information that requires authenticity, readability, and retention through tamper-proof functions.
